Cherokee County Members Pick Name for Senior Center

By Joseph Martin

MARBLE - After some controversy from naming the center before and what some had suggested were private meetings, members of the Cherokee County Community met at the community club June 24 to vote again on the name of the senior citizens center to be built. Members who attended this meeting voted to name the center “Tsalagi Elders Center.” It will be built behind the community club building.

Some of the controversy centered on the previous naming of the center John Welch Senior Center. Community Club Chairperson Glenda Sanders went to the June Tribal Council session to express objections. Some community members accused her of holding secret meetings to discuss the issue.

Sanders before the last meeting denied holding secret meetings and said of her council visit that her concern was that there were those who didn’t get to voice their concerns at other meetings.
